Young Olive School pupils deliver festive cheer to care home’s elderly residents
Reception Pupils from The Olive School, Preston made a visit to New Brook Housing in New Hall Lane with shoe box gifts for elderly residents.
Together with their familes, pupils took care to consider suitable items to include in their festive shoe boxes. The gifts included toiletries, chocolates, books, tinned food and slippers.
The school was keen to support older people living in its local community as part of its Festive Winter Gift Programme. This annual programme encourages pupils to think of others during December as they prepare gifts and cards to help spread festive cheer.
Majid Ditta, Principal of The Olive School, Preston, said:
“Our school has a commitment to nurture within our pupils a sense of responsibility and a desire to take positive action in their local communities. Preparing gifts for others at certain times of the year, Christmas being one of them, is one of the ways we teach our pupils about charitable giving.
“Additionally, one of the 17 areas of the Early Years Curriculum aims to help young pupils gain a deeper understanding of the world around them beyond their home and their school life. We felt that taking gifts to New Brook Housing residents was a perfect way for us to highlights the needs of others living locally and put smiles on the faces of older residents.”
One Parklands resident commented:
Lilly, a resident at New Brook Housing commented:
‘I really appreciate the present. I have not had a present for over ten years. This is a very special day for me.’
The Olive School pupil Mayra added: ‘I really enjoyed today. The old people were friendly and funny. I was happy when I gave my present.’
